Pressure units
- Psi
- Psi is one pound-force per square inch, about 6894.757 pascals. It is the everyday pressure unit in the United States, used for tires, compressors and plumbing.
- Bar
- A bar is exactly 100,000 pascals, slightly less than average atmospheric pressure at sea level. It is widely used in Europe for tire pressures, weather and industrial equipment.
- Kilopascal (kPa)
- A kilopascal is 1000 pascals. It is the common SI unit for tire pressures, weather reports and engineering in metric countries.
- Pascal (Pa)
- The pascal is the SI unit of pressure, equal to one newton per square meter. It is a small unit, so kilopascals and megapascals are more common in practice.
- Atmosphere (atm)
- The standard atmosphere is defined as exactly 101,325 pascals, approximately the average air pressure at sea level. It is used as a reference pressure in chemistry and physics.
- Megapascal (MPa)
- A megapascal is 1,000,000 pascals, or 10 bar. It is used for hydraulic pressures and for the strength of materials such as steel and concrete.
- Millimeter of mercury (mmHg)
- A millimeter of mercury is the pressure exerted by a 1 mm column of mercury, conventionally 133.322387415 pascals. It is the standard unit for blood pressure readings.
- Millibar (mbar)
- A millibar is one thousandth of a bar, exactly 100 pascals, and is identical to the hectopascal. It is used in meteorology for atmospheric pressure.
- Inch of mercury (inHg)
- An inch of mercury is the pressure exerted by a 1 inch column of mercury, conventionally about 3386.389 pascals. It is used in the United States for barometric pressure in weather reports and aviation.
- Torr
- A torr is exactly 1/760 of a standard atmosphere, about 133.322 pascals. It is used mainly for vacuum measurements.
- Hectopascal (hPa)
- A hectopascal is 100 pascals, identical to the millibar. It is the unit used for atmospheric pressure in weather reports and aviation in most countries.
- Kilogram-force per square centimeter (kgf/cm²)
- A kilogram-force per square centimeter is exactly 98,066.5 pascals and is also called the technical atmosphere. It appears on older pressure gauges and in some Asian and European equipment specifications.
