Data storage units
- Megabyte (MB)
- A megabyte is 1,000,000 bytes (1000 kilobytes). It is the usual unit for the size of photos, songs and documents.
- Gigabyte (GB)
- A gigabyte is 1,000,000,000 bytes (1000 megabytes). It is the usual unit for memory cards, phone storage and mobile data plans.
- Kilobyte (kB)
- A kilobyte is 1000 bytes. It is used for small files such as text documents and icons.
- Byte (B)
- A byte is a group of 8 bits and the basic addressable unit of computer memory and storage. One byte can hold one of 256 values.
- Terabyte (TB)
- A terabyte is 1,000,000,000,000 bytes (1000 gigabytes). It is the usual unit for hard drive and SSD capacities.
- Bit
- A bit is the smallest unit of digital information, a single binary value of 0 or 1. Eight bits make one byte.
- Megabit (Mbit)
- A megabit is 1,000,000 bits, equal to 125,000 bytes. Internet connection speeds are quoted in megabits per second (Mbps).
- Gigabit (Gbit)
- A gigabit is 1,000,000,000 bits, equal to 125,000,000 bytes. It is used for fast network links such as gigabit Ethernet and fiber broadband.
- Kilobit (kbit)
- A kilobit is 1000 bits, equal to 125 bytes. It is used for audio bit rates and slow data links, in kilobits per second (kbps).
- Gibibyte (GiB)
- A gibibyte is 1,073,741,824 bytes (1024 mebibytes). RAM sizes and the capacities reported by Windows are measured in gibibytes.
- Mebibyte (MiB)
- A mebibyte is 1,048,576 bytes (1024 kibibytes). It is the binary counterpart of the megabyte, used by operating systems and for memory sizes.
- Kibibyte (KiB)
- A kibibyte is 1024 bytes. It is the binary counterpart of the kilobyte and the smallest of the IEC binary multiples.
- Petabyte (PB)
- A petabyte is 1,000,000,000,000,000 bytes (1000 terabytes). It is used for the storage of data centers and large archives.
- Tebibyte (TiB)
- A tebibyte is 1,099,511,627,776 bytes (1024 gibibytes). It is the binary counterpart of the terabyte, about 10% larger.
- Terabit (Tbit)
- A terabit is 1,000,000,000,000 bits, equal to 125,000,000,000 bytes. It is used for the capacity of backbone and submarine network links.
- Pebibyte (PiB)
- A pebibyte is 1,125,899,906,842,624 bytes (1024 tebibytes). It is the binary counterpart of the petabyte, about 12.6% larger.
