Bytes to Bits Converter
How to convert bytes to bits
bits = bytes × 8
To convert bytes to bits, multiply the number of bytes by 8.
1 B = 8 bit
Examples
- 1,024 B × 8 = 8,192 bit
- 1,000,000 B × 8 = 8,000,000 bit
Good to know
One byte is 8 bits. Abbreviations are case-sensitive: a lowercase b means bits and an uppercase B means bytes.
8 bits make 1 byte. Bits (lowercase b) and bytes (uppercase B) are easily confused in abbreviations such as Mb and MB.

Unit definitions
- Byte (B)
- A byte is a group of 8 bits and the basic addressable unit of computer memory and storage. One byte can hold one of 256 values.
- Bit
- A bit is the smallest unit of digital information, a single binary value of 0 or 1. Eight bits make one byte.
